Description

This specially created practical day will see students using some classic Biology science practicals as a way to revise both content from Unit 2 and general principles around the Scientific Method (worth around 25% of the GCSE).

Example content:

  1. Practical 1: Energy from food (Unit 2e)
  2. Practical 2: Food tests (Unit 2c)
  3. Practical 3: Effect of temp/pH on enzymes (Unit 2c)
  4. Practical 4: Production of carbon dioxide by anaerobic respiration in yeast (Unit 2f, 5a)
  5. Practical 5: Starch production in leaves (Unit 2e, 2g)
  6. Scientific concepts: Variables, validity, accuracty, reliability, calculating percentages, safety, graph skills, describe vs explain Qs.

Students will:

  1. Understand why practical investigations are important in science and how they contribute to good exam results
  2. Develop understanding of the scientific method and application of it to exam questions
  3. Improve scientific vocabulary relating to the scientific method and investigative skills
  4. Deepen knowledge and understanding of scientific principles
  5. Learn how to use scientific equipment carefully and accurately

The schedule for the day is currently as follows (subject to change communicated via email):

  • from 10:30am arrival
  • 10:45am prompt, start – housekeeping / safety / outline of the day

Tickets are non-transferable (ie for your sole use only). Directions to the venue and other relevant information will be provided via email.
