KS3 Science: Maths for Science
Maths makes up an essential part of science. Counting and measuring are the first skills in being able to spot patterns. From there we often need to scale things up and down (eg percentages), deal with errors and rearrange equations.
This NEW topic has been specially written to help students develop their understanding of Maths for Science. In school terminology the lessons will be at a lower KS3 level (perhaps more KS2/3) and usually covered in Years 6-8 if in school. In tutoring Home Educated children I’ve found that many haven’t done quite as much maths as their school peers so thought this would be a useful topic.
Lessons will involve students being shown how to use and apply maths in the context of science, something many students finds makes maths easier to understand. Each student will have access to their own Bitpaper for the lesson so they can practice the maths we are learning about and get real-time feedback.
These live and interactive lessons are based on the KS3 Science National Curriculum, they will help students prepare for GCSE Sciences or other similar qualifications. Maths skills typically make up around 30% of a science GCSE.
The lessons are typically suited to students aged approximately 10-14 years of age. Small groups (capped at 10) ensure students get the opportunity to interact with the tutor and have their questions answered.
Lessons can be taken as a whole topic (recommended) or individually, if preferred, as they are written to make sense on a lesson by lesson basis.
Lesson 1 (Weds 9 June): Counting and measuring – Learn about different ways of counting, measuring, using and reading scales
Lesson 2 (Weds 16 June): Errors, averages and anomalies – Learn about different types of error and how to deal with them
Lesson 3 (Weds 23 June): Graphs – Learn how to create scales for graphs, plot points and draw lines of best fit
Lesson 4 (Weds 30 June): Fractions and percentages – Learn how to convert one to the other and do calculations involving both
Lesson 5 (Weds 7 July): Rearranging equations – Learn how to rearrange basic equations such as speed = distance/time
Lesson 6 (Weds 14 July): Details tbc – I’d like to wait and see how the lessons go before firming up a title for this one. We may use it to practice concepts covered in earlier lessons (if needed), we may look at Standard Form.
- Lesson titles are a guide only, exact content may vary (lessons aren’t all written at the time of posting and are tailored to suit a particular group).
- Please ensure the Zoom name of the learner matches that entered on the ticket below. Their Zoom name is their ‘password’ to enter the lesson. Incorrectly named students may not be admitted to the lesson.
- Learners are advised to join the Zoom room at least 10 minutes before the start of the lesson. Assistance with IT difficulties is not possible once the lesson has started.
- Ticket sales will end at least half an hour before the lesson is due to start.
Andy is a qualified and experienced science teacher who has worked as both a secondary school teacher and a private tutor since 2009. He has also worked in research for the NHS and in CAMHS (Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services). Andy’s love of science started as a child when he used to create fact files about plants and animals. Andy is interested in all types of science from Astronomy to Zoology and likes to help his students link their learning to everyday life. Andy is a co-founder of Tutor Led Learning.

Joining lessons is easy:
- Find the ticket we emailed you for this lesson (check junk/spam if you can’t find it)
- Click the Zoom* link in the ticket and join the lesson!
*We strongly recommend downloading and testing out Zoom before using it for the lesson. Your child is advised to use a computer, laptop or tablet to access the lesson. Some tutors may encourage the use of cameras and microphones but it will always be optional.
