Astronomy – Space

Our Monday morning group have really embraced learning all about Space. This bonus topic is being specially written to extend learning a bit further and keep our nerdy vibe going! New members very welcome 🙂

Together we will go on some great adventures! What are black holes all about? How hot is our Sun? Did life arrive on Earth on a comet? Will we ever live on Mars?

These small group lessons will contain no more than 10 students per class. Small groups enable tutors to get to know individual students, tailor teaching to meet group needs and create maximum opportunities for interaction and engagement via cameras, microphones, chat, polls and quizzes (all are optional).

Tutors are available online 10 minute before the advertised start time of the lesson. This is a great time to get to know each other, review previous learning or have specific questions answered. Students completing all lessons in a topic will receive a certificate congratulating them on their work – these can be useful if evidence is required for schools or local authorities.

These lessons are not based on the KS3 Science National Curriculum – they are designed to broaden and deepen scientific knowledge above and beyond that usually taught in school. Some of this content relates to the Astronomy GCSE.

It is recommended that lessons are taken as a whole topic to give the students and the tutor a chance to get into the subject properly. However lessons can be taken individually if preferred – all students will be made to feel welcome and helped to join in whenever they attend.

These lessons are typically suited to students aged approximately 10-14 years of age.

Lesson 1 (Mon 2 August): Our Sun – Learn about sun spots, solar wind, the solar cycle and solar probes.

Lesson 2 (Mon 9 August): Comets – What are they made of? Where do they come from? What do they tell us about the Universe?

Lesson 3 (Mon 16 August): Black Holes – Learn the basics of these mysterious structures

Lesson 4 (Mon 23 August): Colonising Mars – Learn about various plans being made to colonise Mars. Will we ever get there? What are the challenges to overcome? Should we even try?

Please note:

  1. Lesson titles are a guide only, exact content may vary (lessons aren’t all written at the time of posting and are tailored to suit a particular group).
  2. Please ensure the Zoom name of the learner matches that entered on the ticket below. Their Zoom name is their ‘password’ to enter the lesson. Incorrectly named students may not be admitted to the lesson.
  3. Learners are advised to join the Zoom room at least 10 minutes before the start of the lesson. Assistance with IT difficulties is not possible once the lesson has started.
  4. Ticket sales will end at least 30 minutes before the lesson is due to start.
