Our book for this term is The Dark is Rising, by Susan Cooper.

Join us as we follow the adventures of eleven-year-old Will who realises he is no normal boy and must now do battle with the forces of darkness.

The first rule of book club is…

…to enjoy yourself!

Outdated references aside (that film was released in 1999! Where does the time go?), we really do want our students to love reading. We think it’s absolutely crucial for success, not only in English, but in other subjects too and, if we’re honest, throughout our whole lives. Communication (whatever age we are) matters.

So promoting a love of literature in our students is something we strongly believe in. In a world that seems to be increasingly filled with distractions, it’s getting hard to carve out the time to sit down with a good book and just… read.

And that’s why we have started this club. Although we usually think of reading as something we do alone, it can actually be an awesome way to connect with others. It’s an opportunity for learners not just to read great writing, but to share ideas, to learn about different perspectives, and to socialise with other like-minded young people. It also helps to have an expert tutor on hand to support, challenge and inspire our students!

We have small group sizes (max 10), so everyone has a chance to share their opinions and ideas, and there’s plenty of time for discussion and for students to get to know each other. We have students from all around the UK, so there’s a good chance of some cross-country friendships being made!

We will spend sometime reading together in our lessons, but students will also need to read in their own time in order to be prepared for work/discussions in the next lesson.

How to Join

Joining lessons is easy:

  1. Find the ticket we emailed you for this lesson (check spam/junk if you can’t find it)
  2. Click the Zoom* link in the ticket and join the lesson!

*We strongly recommend downloading and testing out Zoom before using it for the lesson. Your child is advised to use a computer, laptop or tablet to access the lesson. Some tutors may encourage the use of cameras and microphones but it will always be optional.

It’s important to be nice…

We treat all members of our community with respect and expect our students to do the same. We will not tolerate any abusive language or behaviour towards either students or tutors and we may remove students who behave inappropriately from any lesson without warning.

Please note:

  1. Lesson titles are a guide only, exact content may vary (lessons aren’t all written at the time of posting and sometimes inspiration strikes!).
  2. Please ensure the Zoom name of the learner matches that entered on the ticket below. Their Zoom name is their ‘password’ to enter the lesson. Incorrectly named students may not be admitted to the lesson.
  3. Learners are advised to join the Zoom room at least 10 minutes before the start of the lesson. Assistance with IT difficulties is not possible once the lesson has started.
  4. Ticket sales will end at least one hour before the lesson is due to start – don’t delay, book today 🙂
