KS3/4 Psychology: Mental Health (Tuesdays or Thursdays)
These live and interactive lessons are designed to introduce students to age relevant ideas and concepts about mental health. The lessons are typically suited to students aged approximately 12-16 years of age.
It’s fascinating. Everything you ever do, every moment you ever experience, every thought, feeling or idea you have is processed in your mind. We each have a supercomputer sitting on top of our shoulders, busily making sense of the world. And yet, it’s only fairly recently that we’ve begun to think carefully about how to take care of our minds, to think about how they work, and to find ways to improve them. It’s only recently that the term ‘mental health’ is something we hear in everyday conversations, in the news, or on social media but it’s becoming clear to us all just how important understanding mental health is. Particularly for young people becoming tomorrow’s adults, preparing for an uncertain and challenging future.
Tutors Andy and Dave both have extensive experience not only as teachers, but in mental health too. Andy has worked in the NHS both in Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS) and also in a research unit investigating reasons for behavioural challenges in schools. Dave was the Director of Learning at Delphis, a training company that helped organisations promote good mental health amongst their staff. Both are trained Mental Health First Aiders. They are both looking forward to sharing their knowledge with young people and helping promote a good understanding of mental health in the next generation.
This is a potentially sensitive topic and Andy and Dave understand that some students may have direct or indirect experience of the issues raised. Therefore, in order for all students to feel comfortable, student cameras and microphones will not be used. Personal information will not be requested or discussed if raised. To keep the lessons interactive, students will still be able to communicate with the tutor via the chat function. Quizzes and polls will also be used (participation will be optional).
Lessons can be taken as a whole topic (recommended) or individually, if preferred, as they are written to make sense on a lesson by lesson basis.
Lesson 1 (Thurs 10 June): Introduction to Mental Health – learn what we mean by mental health, how people have understood it in the past and about some organisations which help people improve their mental health
Lesson 2 (Thurs 17 June): Self-esteem and resilience – learn what is meant by self-esteem, what researchers have found out about how it affects our lives and how people can take steps to boost their self-esteem
Lesson 3 (Thurs 24 June): Better Mental Health – learn about different activities that can help people improve their mental health
Lesson 4 (Thurs 1 July): Stress and Anxiety – learn about the biological mechanisms behind stress and anxiety, how this can affect people differently and ways to manage it
Lesson 5 (Thurs 8 July)): Psychological Conditions – an introduction to some psychological conditions (depression, bipolar and self-harm) and how they are treated
Lesson 6 (Thurs 15 July): Psychological Conditions – an introduction to some psychological conditions (borderline personality disorder, psychosis, OCD and eating disorders ) and how they are treated

Andy is a qualified and experienced science teacher who has worked as both a secondary school teacher and a private tutor since 2009. He has also worked in research for the NHS and in CAMHS (Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services). Andy’s love of science started as a child when he used to create fact files about plants and animals. Andy is interested in all types of science from Astronomy to Zoology and likes to help his students link their learning to everyday life. Andy is a co-founder of Tutor Led Learning.
David is a qualified English teacher with a master’s degree in contemporary literature. He worked in secondary schools for four years before becoming a Director of Delphis, a mental health training company. David has been tutoring a range of students since 2018 and really loves the opportunity to make a real difference and inspire young minds! He also teaches Philosophy lessons and is a co-founder of Tutor Led Learning.
How to Join
Joining lessons is easy:
- Find the ticket we emailed you for this lesson (check junk/spam if you can’t find it)
- Click the Zoom* link in the ticket and join the lesson!
*We strongly recommend downloading and testing out Zoom before using it for the lesson. Your child is advised to use a computer, laptop or tablet to access the lesson. Some tutors may encourage the use of cameras and microphones but it will always be optional.
It’s important to be nice…
We treat all members of our community with respect and expect our students to do the same. We will not tolerate any abusive language or behaviour towards either students or tutors and we may remove students who behave inappropriately from any lesson without warning.
- Lesson titles are a guide only, exact content may vary (lessons aren’t all written at the time of posting and are tailored to suit a particular group).
- Please ensure the Zoom name of the learner matches that entered on the ticket below. Their Zoom name is their ‘password’ to enter the lesson. Incorrectly named students may not be admitted to the lesson.
- Learners are advised to join the Zoom room at least 10 minutes before the start of the lesson. Assistance with IT difficulties is not possible once the lesson has started.
- Ticket sales will end at least half an hour before the lesson is due to start.
