These Explorer Lessons are about deciding right and wrong.

In this topic, we will encounter challenging moral dilemmas, learn about differing opinions of how we should behave, and challenge our intuitions about what makes a person good or bad.

  • Should we always do what creates the most good in the world, or should we follow rules no matter what the consequences?
  • Does it matter what your intentions are when you act a certain way, or is it only the outcome that matters?
  • Should you eat your friends to survive?

In these lessons, we will explore these complicated problems and introduce ourselves to the work of some famous philosophers.

I can’t promise you will come away with any clear any answers, but you will be in a better position to think more deeply about right and wrong and how we should behave in the world.

Prior Learning: No specialist prior learning is required.

Lesson 1 (Mon 22 Feb):  Don’t rock the boat – Stranded at sea with no food in sight… how far do you go to survive?

Lesson 2 (Mon 1 Mar): Tough decisions – Kill one to save many or just be a bystander? What will you do?

Lesson 3 (Mon 8 Mar): Animals – Just like us, or just for us? Where do you stand on animal rights?

Lesson 4 (Mon 15 Mar): Consequences – If we always do what makes the most people the most happy, then we’re doing something right, right? Well, perhaps not…

Lesson 5 (Mon 22 Mar): Duty – Perhaps doing what’s right is about following rules. Should we always follow a rule such as to never steal, though? What if you need it to survive…

Lesson 6 (Mon 29 Mar): Virtue – Maybe being good is just about behaving like a superhero would. Aristotle certainly thought so – do you?
